Technology & Maintenance

Hard use in punishing desert environments - heat, sand, and static - means that the engines and airframes require constant, rigorous attention. The Air Force places this demanding work into the hands of skilled young airmen, as young as 19 years old. Oils are tested for contaminants that might indicate excessive wear on mechanical parts. Spares that aren’t directly available can be ordered from the supplier for aircraft still in production, requested from the Boneyard at Davis-Monthan, AZ for older airframes, and some can even be fabricated locally from scratch in machine shops on-base.
